Water polo players Brandon Jung and Waneek Horn-Miller in 2010 Torch Relay

OTTAWA – Canadian national team water polo players Brandon Jung of Burnaby, B.C., and Waneek Horn-Miller of Kahnawake, Que., are part of the 2010 Olympic Torch Relay that is currently criss-crossing the nation.

Jung, a member of Canada’s 2008 Olympic men’s team, is scheduled to do his run in Nelson, B.C., on January 23, 2010 as the torch begins its stretch run to its final destination. Horn-Miller, a member of the 2000 Olympic women’s water polo team, ran on December 3 in Wendake, Que.

‘’It feels pretty good to get that opportunity,’’ said Jung, 23. ‘’Especially that I now live in Vancouver it’s a pretty big deal. I fulfilled a lifelong dream last year when I played for Canada at the Olympics. It was the first time the Canadian men’s team had been in the Games since 1976 so it was really special for us.

Ahmed El-Awadi, Water Polo Canada’s executive director, said both players are great representatives for the sport.

‘’We are very proud to have both Waneek and Brandon as torch bearers,’’ he said. ‘’The relay signifies many great things and we are proud to have two great water polo athletes representing the water polo community and Canada with this prestigious honour. This is another historic year with Canada hosting the Olympics and we would like to congratulate the all the Canadian athlete participating and wish them all the best and success”

The 2010 Torch Relay started on October 30, 2009 and concludes at the Opening Ceremony signalling the start of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games on February 12, 2010 after 100 days of travelling over 45 000 kilometres throughout Canada. The torch will cross over 1000 communities with over 200 celebrations hosted in every province and territory.

Vancouver, B.C. – August 12, 2009  - Four Medal Round Performances for Team BC

Tomorrow morning the four squads comprising Team BC return from the 41st Annual Hawaiian Invitational Water Polo Tournament, in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA --- the largest and longest-running international invitational water polo tournament in the world. Each year 100 teams are invited to compete in this showcase event.

This year the tournament welcomed US club teams as well as teams from Australia, Brazil, New Zealand and of course our own Team BC to participate in a week of non-stop, competitive water polo.

The U18 boys final was particularly exciting with the Team BC Squad getting the winning goal over SoPenn with just 2 seconds to go in regulation time.  The last minute was frenetic with 3 alternating direct shot goals in the final 21 seconds with the game ending 6-5!  For his efforts Team BC #2 - Cody Dodds (Maple Ridge - team Captain) with 1 goal in the game was recognized MVP.  Alexander Vazeos (Coquitlam) scored the winning goal while Chris Vanjoff (Abbotsford) scored 3 times and Julian Kotylak (Maple Ridge) tallied once.

Breakthrough Wins for Canadian Water Polo

Vancouver, B.C. – August 10, 2009 - It has been an unprecedented year for Canadian water polo. At the 2009 FINA World Championships held recently in Rome, Italy the Canadian Senior Women’s team rocked the water polo world by taking the silver medal in a hotly contested gold medal final with the US. In what would ultimately be a controversial match that showcased a hard fought, seesaw battle from the opening minute of play it was just  one goal that separated the two super powers at the final whistle. This was the best showing for the Canadian women in world championship play and catapulted the Canadian Senior Women to the number 2 position in the world standings.

See FINA PRESS OFFICE Women’s Final recap:

Pitt Meadow’s Carmen Eggens is a member of the Canadian Senior Women’s team and at age 20 one if it’s youngest members. “Being named to the Canadian Senior Women’s team and playing in the World Championships  was the realization of a long held dream…in 2005 I watched the Canadian Women play in the World Championships in Montreal……..I never imaged that in 4 years I would be on the team….it was fantastic!”

Eggens is currently enjoying some R & R with family before returning to the University of Hawaii where she is a junior.

The Canadian Senior Men also playing at 2009 FINA World Championships nabbed an 8th place finish. This was a breakthrough year for the Canadian Men who for the first time have secured a spot in the top 8 world ranking.
